Tim Walker is an independent author living near Windsor in the UK. He grew up in Liverpool where he began his working life as a trainee reporter on a local newspaper. After attaining an honours degree in Communication Studies, he moved to London where he worked for United News and Media Group for ten years before relocating to Zambia where, following a period of voluntary work with British aid agency, VSO, he set up a marketing and publishing business. Between 2000 – 2005, he published and edited a construction industry magazine and a business newspaper, before joining GeoQuest Ltd., a mineral exploration company, as General Manager. He returned to the UK in 2009.
His creative writing journey began in earnest in 2013 as a therapeutic activity whilst undergoing and recovering from cancer treatment. After publishing a collection of short stories in 2015, he embarked on writing an historical fiction series, A Light in the Dark Ages, inspired by a visit to the site of a part-excavated Roman town. The aim of the series is to connect the end of Roman Britain to elements of the Arthurian legend, presenting an imagined history of Britain in the fifth and early sixth centuries.
A Light in the Dark Ages series is complete with the publication of book five, Arthur, Rex Brittonum, in June 2020. This novel is a re-imagining of the story of King Arthur based on the earliest historical evidence. It was short-listed in the Historical Fiction (early medieval period) Book of the Year category in the 2020 Coffee Pot Book Club Awards, receiving an honourable mention.
His latest work is a standalone dual timeline historical novel, Guardians at the Wall, published in June 2021. The story concerns the discovery of an artefact by a student archaeologist that connects him to the life of a Roman centurion in second century Britannia, and was inspired by a visit to Hadrian’s Wall in 2020. It received the International Review of Books Gold Star Award from booksgosocial.com.
As mentioned above, Tim devoted his time between 2015 and 2020 researching and writing A Light in the Dark Ages book series. 2020’s Arthur Rex Brittonum was preceded by Arthur Dux Bellorum in 2019, the story of a youthful Arthur that received recognition from two sources that year - One Stop Fiction Book of the Month in April, and an honourable mention in the Coffee Pot Book Club Book of the Year (Historical Fiction) Awards. The series starts with Abandoned (2015, second edition, 2018); followed by Ambrosius: Last of the Romans (2017); and book three, Uther's Destiny (2018). Series book covers were designed by Canadian graphic artist, Cathy Walker.
Tim has also written two books of short stories, Thames Valley Tales (2015), and Postcards from London (2017); a dystopian thriller, Devil Gate Dawn (2016); Perverse (verse and short fiction, 2020); and three children's books, co-authored with his daughter, Cathy - The Adventures of Charly Holmes (2017); Charly & the Superheroes (2018) and Charly in Space (2020).
